Retail Concept

For its first American flagship, Printemps collaborated with French architect Laura Gonzalez to create a new retail destination within the historic One Wall Street building in Manhattan.

Conceived as a contemporary Parisian apartment, the 55,000-square-foot space brings together fashion, beauty, dining, and hospitality through a series of distinctive interiors. Combining French decorative traditions with New York's Art Deco heritage, the project introduces a more intimate and exploratory approach to luxury retail, where each room offers a different atmosphere and experience.

Rather than following a conventional department store layout, Gonzalez designed a sequence of interconnected environments, each with its own identity. The Red Room, Playroom, Salon Vert, Boudoir, and Beauty Corridor combine contrasting materials, colors, and architectural references.

Richly patterned textiles, sculptural lighting, custom furniture, and handcrafted surfaces create a layered interior that invites visitors to move freely between retail, hospitality, and cultural experiences.

One of the project's defining elements is the restoration and reinterpretation of the Red Room, the landmark Art Deco interior originally designed by Hildreth Meière in the 1930s.

Its red and gold mosaic surfaces were preserved and integrated into a contemporary retail setting, where delicate white metal structures and sculptural displays contrast with the room's historic architecture. The intervention reflects the project's broader ambition to connect the building's heritage with a new generation of retail experiences.
